Talk Community Foundation to Host Second Annual High School Public Speaking
Contest on October 22, 2011
Orange, NJ – On October 22, 2011, Local Talk Community
Foundation will hold its second annual public speaking competition open to
public high school students in Newark, Irvington, East Orange, West Orange,
Orange, South Orange, Maplewood, Bloomfield, and Montclair. This competition
will take place at the Robert Treat Hotel at 50 Park Place in Newark. The doors
will open at 11:00 am, and the event will begin at 12:00 pm.
Tickets for the event are
available now. The price is $30 per person, and include a light luncheon.

The basic rules of the competition are as follows: Schools will select one
finalist for the competition, which can be determined for example by an open
mini-competition at the school among students who are interested, or whatever
means the school may deem appropriate in selecting its finalist.
The deadline for participating schools to submit their candidate
for the competition has been extended to October 7, 2011. We would
appreciate a photo and small bio for our publication. Finalists will have their
photo and small bio published in the next edition of Local Talk Weekly Newspaper
following the deadline date.
For the competition, finalists will present a *5 minute speech (*This
may be shortened per the number of finalists) on one of the following
topics:
► How does participating in sports activities give you a
healthier lifestyle?
► How important is social media to youth?
► What does the phrase “Go Green” mean to you?
► What will improve the school system?
► Should the United States be involved in wars like Iraq, Afghanistan, and
Libya?
► Should we have universal healthcare?
Our diverse and dignified
group of judges will determine the top three speakers at the competition, based
on parameters such as diction, knowledge of subject, etc.
The first place scholarship winner will earn a $3,000 scholarship,
while the second and third place winners will be awarded $2,000 and $1,000
respectively. These three winners will have their awards placed in a bank for
use when the student attends their college/university.
