11th National Black Writers Conference, at Medgar Evers College, NYC March 29-April 1, 2012

March 29 – April 1, 2012

The Eleventh National Black Writers Conference (NBWC) returns in 2012.

Presented by the Center for Black Literature at Medgar Evers College,

CUNY, the conference will be March 29 – April 1, 2012 and will take

place at Medgar Evers College in Central Brooklyn, NY. This year’s

theme is The Impact of Migration, Popular Culture, and the Natural

Environment in the Literature of Black Writers.

NBWC will provide writers, scholars, literary professionals, students,

and the public with a forum for dynamic engagement. Join the spirited

conversations, panel discussions, readings, workshops, and

performances on themes related to migration, cultural memory, popular

culture, and the natural environment. Review the full 2012 NBWC

program schedule.

As our society becomes increasingly globalized, the themes in the

literary texts and literature created by black writers all over the

world are shifting. There’s recognition of the importance of

preserving cultural memory and identity and of cultivating

geographical spaces. At the same time, there is also a recognition

that politics and popular culture shape what we respond to, what we

read, what gets published, what we teach, and what conversations we

have…wherever we are.

2012 NBWC Honorees:

Ishmael Reed John Oliver Killens Lifetime Achievement Award

Ngugi Wa Thiong’o WEB DuBois Award

Nikki Giovanni Gwendolyn Brooks Award

Dr. Howard Dodson Ida B. Wells Institutional Leadership Award
